About the Editor

Dr Bryann Avendaño-Uribe is a knowledge broker and former Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Guest Lecturer in Humanitarian Engineering at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. He holds two honours bachelor’s degrees in Science, Biology and Ecology, alongside continuing studies certificates in Business and Leadership from Georgetown University (USA) and in Modelling and Simulation from CIRAD, Montpellier (France), as well as a PhD from the Civil and Environmental Engineering department at the University of Canterbury. With over ten years of experience working with local governments and underrepresented communities across Latin America, Oceania, and Africa, Dr Bryann has addressed diverse challenges related to climate change adaptation, scientific education, and environmental planning. He is the co-founder and consultant at ScienteLab, a non-profit think tank providing STEAM education experiences and community-driven innovations to remote and rural communities. His research interests include community engagement for humanitarian engineering interventions and disaster risk and resilience planning. He develops facilitation tools to translate complex scientific knowledge for non-scientific audiences and leverages scientific information through modelling tools, such as Serious Games, Virtual Reality, Participatory Modelling, and other participatory action research tools. Passionate about the outdoors, scuba diving, and climbing, Dr Bryann also regularly contributes to scientific journalism, the social dissemination of science, and science outreach magazines.
