155 Making the Dorm Your Home

Brittany Mullins

Transitioning into college life is hard for just about everyone. It’s understandable, because it is a big change. Probably the hardest aspect would be becoming accustomed to living in a dormitory while also adjusting to the other elements, such as the independence involved in being a college student.

Satin Bentley, a freshman at UPIKE, stated that the transition was one that she simultaneously felt excited and scared for. Many other students felt the same way Satin did. That’s why it’s encouraged to ask for help or look to resources that have information on the topic. Below is a guide with some helpful information and tips to help make this process easier and a more enjoyable experience

Before (Empty Room)

After (Customized Room)

DO’S

DON’T’S

Mock your personal bedroom at home with the same items (curtains, pillows, bedding, etc.). This will make the dorm feel more like the home you know.

Buy all new items; it will make you feel uncomfortable. Enough changes have already been made to your life.

Match the scent of your room from home by using tart burners or other fragrance outlets

Over-estimate how many items to bring – you don’t get a lot of space. Try to purchase storage bins to create more room.

WHAT TO BRING

  • Blanket from home
  • Pictures with friends
  • Comfort items (fuzzy socks, snacks, etc.)
  • Extra fan
  • Wall art
  • Mini fridge
  • Desk organizer
  • Mattress pad

OTHER HELPFUL TIPS

  • Make sure to become friends with your roommate. It’s easier to transition if you’re comfortable with those around you.
  • Don’t be closed off from meeting new people!
