Practice Using Pressbooks
This Google Drive folder contains test content you can use to practice the following:
- Copy and paste text from a Google Doc into a Pressbooks chapter
- Add images to a Pressbooks chapter
- Add images to your book’s media library
Practice Adding Google Doc Text to Pressbooks
Log into Pressbooks and open the visual editor of the Pressbooks chapter you want to edit. Open this Google Doc containing sample text you can add to Pressbooks.
Select a section of text, copy it, and paste it into Pressbooks. Note that text, bullets, and hyperlinks carry over. Other text formatting does not copy over (e.g. headings, italics, boldface, etc.).
After you have added the text to the chapter, take a moment to add any formatting you want to use: headings, italics, boldface, etc. Remember that use of formatted headings is a critical part of making your content accessible.
Practice Adding Images to the Media Library and to Your Pressbooks Chapter
Open this Google Drive folder and pick an image you want to add to your chapter. Download the image to your device. (Note: All these images can be attributed to Pressbooks with a CC-0 open license.)
To add the image directly to the chapter, open the Pressbooks chapter you want to edit. Click “Add Media” and then click “Upload Files.” Upload the image. In the relevant fields, add Alt-text to describe the image and ensure it is accessible. Add a caption if desired. Add attribution information to indicate the source and licensing of the image.
After you hit “save,” the image is added to your Media Library. It should also appear in the section of the chapter where you selected “Add Media.”
Once it has been added to the chapter, you may:
- Resize the image by selecting the image, holding and dragging the corner to make it smaller or larger
- Click the “edit” button to change how the text flows around the image
- Move the image to a different place in the chapter using cut/paste
Practice Adding Images to the Media Library
Select one or more images you want to add to the Media Library for your book. Download the images to your device.
Clicking the “Media” button in the left-hand navigation. Click “Upload Files.” Follow prompts to upload the image files.
For each image, click on the image to select it. In the relevant fields, add Alt-text to describe the image and ensure it is accessible. Add a caption if desired. Add attribution information to indicate the source and licensing of the image.
**Accessibility Reminder**
When you add images, videos, or other content to Pressbooks, you still need to take steps to ensure it is accessible. Images need alt-text. Videos need good-quality captions and transcripts. Slides need to use headings and structure that allow them to be readable via screen reader.
Pressbooks provides a variety of features you can use to publish accessible content, but you need to apply these features in order to end up with an accessible resource.
