P7: When to Look
When should you start looking at job ads? I suggest you look at them when you start working towards a career and continue to consider them every few months. Such a search can be anxiety-producing when you cannot find jobs in your field or when you see the perfect job and know you are not ready to apply. However, too often teachers, academics, and instructors are out of touch with the requirements of the workforce. Additionally, our workforce needs shift quickly these days. Keeping up with hiring trends in your field may increase your chances of getting a job when you are ready to start looking. Additionally, you can prepare while in school or in training.
When should you start looking for an actual job? It can take months, and sometimes years, to find a job in your field, especially if you are new to the field. Most seniors start looking toward the beginning of their last semester. If you are in a training program, you might start looking a few months before you finish. You may come across a company that is unwilling to wait, but many will wait for graduation. At the very least, start 2-3 months before you will be available.
Exercise: A Draft of Your Portfolio
When you are ready, build a draft of your portfolio.
Finding a job can be a challenge. Take the time to learn as much as you can about hiring in your field while building your portfolio, and you will be ahead of the pack.
