Chapter 4: Space Management
Lesson Topics and Learning Objectives
By the end of this chapter, the learner will be able to do the following:
Lesson 1: Tracking
- Evaluate the intended path of the vehicle and explain how to maintain the correct position in the lane
- Identify the benefits of searching to the target area
Lesson 2: Search, Identify, and Manage (SIM)
- Measure space in seconds and accurately judge distance in time
- Identify and describe the searching areas of the SIM process
- Use perceptual skills to recognize vision and/or path restrictions that open or close spaces
- Connect the SIM process to the search areas and manage problems using the best lane position and speed control options as solutions
Lesson 3: Managing Space and Judging Time
- Explain the benefits of managing space and judging time
- Identify the location of the point of no return and describe how and why it is used
- Demonstrate the ability to manage space and judge time including the point of no return and following distance
Lesson 4: Backing
- Apply the SIM process for backing
- Demonstrate the correct hand position and steering technique for backing straight and backing turns
- Determine the best speed control option while backing
- Identify the location of the pivot point and how to use it
Lesson 5: Turnaround Maneuvers
- Identify the types of turnaround maneuvers
- Select the best turnaround maneuver to perform in various environments and situations
- Perform the necessary steps used for the different types of turnaround maneuvers
Lesson 6: Parking
- Identify and perform the correct procedures used to enter and exit angle parking spaces
- Identify and perform the correct procedures used to enter and exit perpendicular parking spaces
- Identify and perform the correct procedures used to enter and exit back-in angle parking spaces
- Identify and perform the correct procedures used to enter and exit back-in perpendicular parking spaces
- Identify and perform the correct procedures used to enter and exit parallel parking spaces
