Lesson Topics and Learning Objectives

By the end of this chapter, the learner will be able to do the following:

Lesson 1: Risks Involved in Driving

  • Identify and explain various risk factors for the driver, vehicle, and environment in the Highway Transportation System (HTS)
  • Connect the importance of developing habits to help manage risks

Lesson 2: Preparing to Drive

  • Explain and demonstrate personal preparedness, proper approach, entry, pre-drive, starting and securing procedures

Lesson 3: Instruments, Gauges and Symbols

  • Recognize the different instruments, gauges, and symbols for control of a vehicle, and will be able to describe their uses, functions, and possible required responses to them

Lesson 4: Vision Control

  • Explain the three types of vision and their uses
  • Describe what a target is in relation to the vehicle path
  • Demonstrate proper use of vision for targeting

Lesson 5: Motion Control

  • Describe how driver action affects vehicle balance
  • Demonstrate the use of pivoting between the brake and accelerator
  • Identify the proper braking techniques used to stop a vehicle smoothly

Lesson 6: Steering Control

  • Identify the correct hand positions and describe the appropriate uses of them
  • Identify the correct steering techniques and describe the appropriate uses of them
