Lesson Three: Stopping Locations (3.3)

Stopping distance can depend on road and weather conditions, the weight of your vehicle, your reaction time, and the braking ability of your vehicle. But what are the different types of stopping?

Legal Stop

Stopping where required by law. Where a stop is required, you must stop before the stop line, marked or unmarked crosswalk or edge of roadway.

Safety Stop

This is used after a legal stop, to search beyond vision restrictions at the intersection.  Inch forward until your front bumper is even with the curb line.  A safety stop is not required by law but is recommended to gather more information.  Never use at a traffic signal.

Staggered Stop

Located approximately 15 feet from the legal stop location. Used to create space for larger vehicles which need more room to turn safely.
